Where is CodePress in WordPress?

Although I usually do my editing in a PHP editor like PSPad (and my new favorite, Notepad++), in preparation for a ActiveBlogging Report for September I decided to check out the PHP syntax highlighting editor now built into WordPress since 2.8.

And couldn’t find it.

The option, which used to be in the Appearance; Editor tab, is gone. In fact, it’s been gone since version 2.8.1, making it one of the most short-lived addons in WP history.

According to this page, the problem was due to ‘browser incompatibilities’.

Will there be another one in the future? I hope so, although frankly I prefer a .EXE for my syntax highlighting rather than fussing with Javascript and/or Ajax on my browser to do the job slower and clunkier. And with the neat syntax highlighting I’m discovering in Notepad++, any online resource is bound to be a pale imitation…

So that’s where that went ;-)

I remember it being available, me being really excited – and then it had gone. There’s me thinking I had dreamt code highlighting in the editor. Thanks for clearing that one up.

I’ve not had a look, do you think there’s a plugin that will bring back Codepress?
