Using WordPress To Create A ‘Regular’ Website

by David Pankhurst - May 12, 2008

On one forum I visit frequently, there’s often talk of using WordPress for non-blog activities, like CMS (content management system) sites or regular sites.

The good news is that it’s quite easy to do. All it requires is the right theme, and understanding how to use WordPress.

For example, rather than the usual blog article list displayed on the main page, you can use the static page setting in WordPress to put a single page on the front (the option is in Admin: Options; Reading; Front page displays a static page).

Then, you edit this page within WordPress to create your home page.

For other pages on your site, create more pages (NOT blog posts), and add them as needed.

The beauty is that you can easily edit these pages, or let others edit them - which make a site like this very simple to maintain for non-technical users.

As well, linking is much easier. Adding a page to a conventional site usually means revisiting all the old pages and adding links from them to the new page. With WordPress, the theme takes care of that, and changes are immediate, since each page is created dynamically (on the fly).

The result is flexibility and simplicity. I use it for my static sites - give it a try, and you might find it fills a need for yours as well.

    Brilliant.

Perfect advice at a perfect time. I’ve been giving myself a headache wanting to figure this out, trying out other programs and CMS. I was just about to bite the bullet when I saw this.

    Thank you.
