Transferring a Domain From GoDaddy to Namecheap

A little while ago I wanted to transfer a domain – oddly enough, I found guides on going from Namecheap to GoDaddy, but none in the other direction. So to save people some effort, here’s the steps I went through to get transfers from GoDaddy to Namecheap:

  • First, go to the Namecheap transfers page and enter the domain. Unless something is very odd, it will say the name can be transferred.
  • From there, go ahead and pay via Namecheap (currently, the coupon SWITCH2NC makes it a $6.99 transfer, including domain hiding – not a bad deal).
  • Now, Namecheap is waiting for an authorization email (EPP) – log into your GoDaddy account and go to the domain section, and select the domain. From there, use the entry “Authorization Code:Send by Email” to get an email sent. By the way, if the domain is locked, now is the time to also unlock it, or it won’t transfer!
  • With that email code, go to Namecheap and click on ‘transfers in progress’, and enter the code for the transfer request. Now the waiting begins.
  • After awhile (a few days), GoDaddy will tell you the transfer is in process – do nothing, and it will go ahead, or log in to stop it. You can also log into GoDaddy to speed it up, in the section “Pending Transfers”, and click on approve.

Wait a little while, and your domain is transferred!
