Blog Comment Spam: Do You Or Don’t You?
While browsing Andy Beard’s site on Internet Marketing I came across his post on comment spam.
I hate comment spam.
Many of you with blogs have a daily chore of vaporizing the many ads from your comments area (I won’t mention the subjects here; I hate the idea of this post bing linked to those topics in the search engines).
Oddly enough, there are some who, while bailing out that comment flood from their blog, then turn around and use the same technique on other’s blogs!
Simply put, comment spam is like email spam: unwanted and misguided comments.
It can be as innocuous as commenting on a post ‘nice blog - visit my site at …’. Or it can be comments that are blatant advertising, including multiple links, title tags, and lots of keyword.
In fact, there are tools that can blast out these types of comments. And services that make it easier to find and post to multiple blogs via comments.
The problem is, this is somewhat similar to the gun issue in the USA - gun makers provide items that in the right hands (ie law enforcement) are used effectively, but in the wrong hands can do untold damage.
So comment services may hope that their users will play nice with their tools, but since everyone’s money is the same color, what they do with it afterwards is not much of a concern.
In the end, it boils down to this: YOU need to be a responsible commenter. By all means, keep track of nofollow tags and Page Rank and search engine placement on blogs you comment on - but make sure the comments are worth the placement.
In fact, I generally find that the higher the PR of a blog, the longer I will sweat out the comment I add (for instance, I’ve occasionally spent longer commenting on Andy’s blog than posting on my own!)
And make sure the comment is valid and appropriate. A good comment should be an exchange of an idea, enhancing the conversation that the blog post started. Treat it as such, and you enrich the conversation.
If in doubt, check out a few of your favorite blogs. Look at the comments. Which inclined you to click through to websites - and then write comments that are THAT good.
