Should I Use WordPress Or Blogger?

A question came up recently as to whether WordPress or Blogger is better for your website.

The problem is that there can be a variety of answers, based on your goals, skill level, and much more.

In a way, it’s like asking whether you should pick green or blue? The question doesn’t provide enough, like what the color is used for, what colors they are exactly, and so on.

So too with WP vs Blogger. You need more details of the expected use – and a little clarification, since the choice is between THREE products, not two.

Why?

Because WordPress comes in two flavors – WordPress.com (which is similar to Blogger.com in that someone hosts your site on WordPress.com), and the self-hosted option, sometimes called WordPress.org (for the site where you can download it).

Of course, there’s other options, but I personally can’t recommend any others right now. Not that they are lacking; it’s simply that the three here balance just about everything you’re looking for, so I don’t see the need to add a fourth choice to the mix.

Here, briefly is what each offers:

  • Ease of use: WordPress.com and Blogger.com score on this, since setting up a blog is very simple – you don’t even need a domain or web site hosting. However, if you’ve worked on web sites, WordPress.org’s version is not far behind.
  • Self hosting: When you go with WordPress.com or Blogger.com your blog is on their servers. This is good for beginners or those not wanting the hassle of running a blog on their site (for example, updating the program), but it’s a two-edged sword: they control your blog as well as host it. Transgress their terms of use and you’re gone. For example, WordPress takes a dim view of using your blog to sell something. In contrast, a WordPress.org blog is on your site, under your control.
