How Can I Edit My WordPress Theme? (Part 3)
Decide/prioritize what’s left to change. Now you have it ‘almost’ there, decide what else you want changed. As I mentioned, changes like coloring and fonts are easier to adjust, while positioning and sizing are often harder, as are the menu changes I mentioned. The reason is that many themes use CSS to position individual items, and so each change can require multiple edits in the style.css file, and then checking the various blog pages to make sure the change is properly set everywhere. In fact, it was this difficulty with things like menus and sizing/positioning in the usual WordPress theme that led me to write the ABTheme, which allows you to make changes in the Admin section, rather than editing HTML or CSS (or PHP, for that matter) directly in the theme.
This is just a quick guide on how to get a good theme ‘look’. Like working on a house, every time you do some of the work yourself you save the cost of bringing in a professional. And by starting with a good theme, doing the changes you can, and then bringing someone in for the remainder, you can go a long way towards saving customization costs.
