How Can I Edit My WordPress Theme? (Part 1)
I read a question on a forum about editing a theme - the design just “didn’t work” for the person, and he wanted significant changes.
This comes up quite often - despite WordPress having a huge selection of themes available (including MY theme at ABTheme.com), there’s need for customization, since everyone quite reasonably wants to personalize theirs.
So what to do? Here’s some guidelines:
Get a theme that’s ‘close’ to the look you want. I recommend going out and previewing themes until you find one that is almost dead on to the look that you want (for example, on the WordPress site). There’s things that are easier or harder to change in a theme, depending on your skill level. Sometimes, Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) editing will do the job; other times, knowing PHP is required.
Just one note: be VERY CAREFUL where you get themes from, as they can be used to break into your site - I give some information on WordPress themes and security in another post.
What is ‘close’? For the most part, easy changes involve coloring and fonts, while harder changes involve positioning and sizing objects (like columns or image sizes). So if you find a theme that isn’t quite the color you want, but has the right number of columns, you’re much closer than a theme that’s colored right, but has a too-big header image and an unneeded column.
