How To Keep Up Your Blogging, And Write Even When You Don’t Want To
You want a steady supply of new articles on your blog so the search engines keep visiting, but you also would like to sleep, eat, vacation, or at least get away from your computer for a couple of hours – what do you do?
Now I know I’m being facetious – unless you are writing the great American novel online, 1 or 2 hours a day is all you need to maintain a blog, and skipping a day or two won’t kill your site.
Of course, that’s assuming all you do is write an article based on a previously-chosen subject you know like the back of your hand – no major research necessary.
But if that ISN’T your case (or you get caught on those rare days when you don’t have the time or energy to give it 175%) THEN what do you do?
Here’s a few tips to keep consistency up, while getting your writing time down.
- Punt. It’s not fun, but every once in a while you have to go for the quick goal, and not give it the maximum. Write a little less, and leave out the ‘heavy’ parts (such as those that requires hours of research). Use a personal story, or reference something you now well. And like a punt, you may not make the big points – but you’ll have tried.
- Write extra when you can. Keep a few ‘almost’ drafts on your blog, and make sure they are just about ready to go. Then in an emergency, they can help out. With WordPress, you can post into the future, so the article WILL appear on that date, exactly as if you did it fresh.
- Split up articles, or do multi part ones. If you find your topic is blowing up into a huge article, consider peeling it up into separate blog posts, or making it a multi-part article. A good rule of thumb is 400 words – approximately. So if your article is 3,000 words, you can surely split it into three parts (or more). And if you find part of the article is providing the groundwork to lead into the main topic, make that groundwork a separate article, and reference it in the second article. Visitors will appreciate the option to read it – or skip it if they know the subject.
- List article ideas. Nothing is so annoying as a deadline with nothing to write about. So when you get those million dollar ideas, write them down! Keep a list somewhere and when an idea hits you, note it down. Build it up, and you’ll have a list to get your brain going on bad days, and something to use when the brain freezes.
