How Do I Get Better Ads in Adsense on My WordPress Blog?

by David Pankhurst - March 12, 2007

A question I hear often is about Adsense on WordPress blogs - how to get better targeted ads, so that the focus of the blog is also the topic of the ads. This is especially a problem for the main page, with changing articles. Here’s some suggestions:

  • Make sure your blog is focused. For example, individual pages have a single article, but the main page (with its group of articles) shows a variety - not a problem if your articles are all on a narrow topic, but a problem if you vary widely. For example, I once blogged about dogs, and ended up with dog ads on my main page for weeks!
  • Make sure your title is set up right. Default WordPress designs usually include a blog title with an <H1> tag, which tells search engines where the focus of the page is (the title, obviously). However, poorly chosen titles can work against you. Choose wisely - or avoid the title, and use a graphic header instead (text drawn on graphics isn’t read by search engines, so no penalty).
  • Is your site section targeted for Adsense? Section targeting means you tell Google what you consider the most important areas of your blog for its ad targeting. It’s a suggestion, not a command they have to obey - but every little bit helps.

That’s the tip of the iceberg to check - but even a small improvement here can help with focusing your blog.
