Finally, it’s often overkill. Once a site is listed in the search engines (one of the main purposes of pinging), they will come on their own, with or without notification. Extra pinging, while doing no harm, won’t accomplish much, either.
A good compromise? At the beginning of a site, use the largest list possible. Once you’re in the search engines, feel free to trim it down to a manageable size – that is, a list that won’t make you go for a coffee break every time you post an article!
