How Big Is YOUR WordPress Ping List? (Part 2)

by David Pankhurst - March 2, 2006

Simply put, the ping list is a series of sites that are notified when a change is made to one of your posts - either posting it initially, or making a change (yes, even edits cause a ping).

Because these lists often display their ‘pingers’, you improve your chances of getting noticed by having a larger list, both by visitors to those sites and search engines.

More or less.

There are pros and cons to this. A large ping list takes a while to execute - this increases the chance that your site will ‘time out’ and not all pings will be sent (many sites limit PHP script executing to a short period before cutting it off).

As well, some ping sites (like pingomatic) take care of pinging other sites for you - in this case, your pings may be redundant. While probably not bad, the more times you call a site, the more times you risk being labeled as a spammer, and possibly being blackballed by a site.
