ActiveBlogging Members and A New Credit System
For the past two years, ActiveBlogging members could run ABTheme for free, month by month, as a members-only bonus (ABTheme is normally licensed via a permanent blog key).
I wrote custom code for that: on the ABTheme side, it would check in with ActiveBlogging (actually, two domains, for redundancy and failsafe protection), and get a confirmation key to continue - if the member was active and had created a key for that site. Otherwise, the plugin would stop working.
And it worked well - I used it on many of my domains, and there was never a failure. In fact, it was a coding joy, and I only wish there was another project to use it on.
However, all good things must pass. I recently came up with the idea of bonus credits for members, redeemable for a variety of items - so why not include ABTheme licenses, and allow members to get PERMANENT licenses instead of month-by-month?
It sounded good, so I’m now phasing out the system, and preparing to mothball it (of course, if anyone is looking for an industrial-strength licensing system for PHP code, give me a ring).
But for AB Members, here’s how it will work now:
- Members get bonus points every month, depending on their level (see the Benefits Page for how much each gets).
- Points are redeemable right now for ABTheme keys only, but I’m hoping to add to that, eventually even products from Top10Tricks.com and daveZdealZ.com
And the bonus points are generous: Platinum members can redeem for a license each month, Bronze every two months, and Gold in between the two (and don’t forget, this is from a FREE bonus!)
The system of course will be tweaked over the next while but I’m very excited by this. I’m looking forward to member feedback as well - hopefully all positive!
