Some people install WordPress in a subdirectory, so they can point to their blog from their main site.
The initial impulse usually seems to be to name the directory /blog/
This is often not a good idea, for a couple of reasons:
Keywords in the URL are valuable. This is prime real estate in your Search Engine Optimization efforts, and shouldn’t be ignored. For example, if you’re doing a blog on dog training, which do you think benefits you more:

http://egwebsite.com/blog/index.php

Statistically, you are viewing this page with Internet Explorer – roughly 5 times as likely as using Mozilla or Firefox, the #2 choice.
However, there are other alternatives out there, and using them is of benefit.

While browsing Andy Beard’s site on Internet Marketing I came across his post on comment spam.
I hate comment spam.
Many of you with blogs have a daily chore of vaporizing the many ads from your comments area (I won’t mention the subjects here; I hate the idea of this post bing linked to those topics in the search engines).
Oddly enough, there are some who, while bailing out that comment flood from their blog, then turn around and use the same technique on other’s blogs!
